April this year, I got to hear about the Noto Earthquake from Pastor Kenji Yokoi who has done several volunteer trips through Hope Japan and I was shocked at the extent of the damage. After hearing his story, I felt called to volunteer and help. I have volunteered to help at the disaster area of the Tohoku Earthquake in 2012 and I wanted to help again not only with labor but sharing God’s love to the people.

I was spending New Years with my family back in Saitama when the earthquake occurred in Noto. The warning alarm gave me flashbacks to the Tohoku earthquake when I was in middle school. At that time, there was so much confusion that I couldn’t go home from school so I spent the night wrapped at school while wrapped in an emergency blanket. After that, the aftershocks would continue and everyday I would hear the emergency news instead of the regular scheduled TV and I would wonder when is the next big earthquake going to occur. The people in Noto may have the same feeling right now. I want to help them as much as possible to get them back on their feet while sharing God’s love.

On January 1st, 2024, a massive earthquake hit Ishikawa prefecture’s Noto peninsula and caused great damage. It’s been 3 months since the disaster and there are still areas with no water, electricity, and damaged roads. Although we live far away in the U.S., Eikou Christian Church has established a ministry called “Love Japan” to provide relief for those affected.
On Saturday, April 13, 2e hosted a fundraising event where we invited Pastor Kenji Yokoi, a pastor at the Japanese International Baptist Church in Oregon where they have been sending volunteers to the relief areas in Japan as part of their “Hope Japan” program. All donations will be used for “Hope Japan”.
My name is Kenji Yokoi, pastor at the Japanese International Baptist Church in Oregon. Hope Japan is a disaster relief branch of our church’s ministry that started back in 2011 following the disaster in Tohoku. God has been using us all around the world for His glory, sharing the love of Jesus in practical ways to those struck by disaster. We are presently serving in the Noto Peninsula, working with 90 senior care homes by bringing them aid and ministering to their hearts.
Thank you for partnering with us in bringing hope!
Your friend,
Kenji
Love❤JAPAN Love Gift
Love❤JAPAN Love Gift is support for the parents of Tomoko Ishihara, one of Eikou Christian Church members. It’s support from our brothers and sisters in the church and close friends who know them and/or Tomoko.
Her parents, Eh-ichi and Yukiko Genku lived in Monzenmachi near the epicenter. They survived the earthquake unharmed, but their house was destroyed.
UPDATE
April 26, 2024
Thank you for your love and generosity!
Your generous donations totaled ¥608,900 (JPY). We received a thank-you letter from Mr. & Mrs. Genku (see below).
March 20, 2024
Their daughter, Tomoko visited them and saw houses collapsed and covered with blue tarps, cracked roads, and landslides across a wide area of her hometown, Wajima City.
At their house, the water supply is still cut off. Water heaters, wardrobes, and other items were toppled over, shoji screens and walls were ripped off by the shaking, and windows and doors could not be closed. The barn and garage were officially declared “totally destroyed” and the main house “partially destroyed”. They who are elderly want to live in their familiar house while repairing it.
Monzen Bible Church is in this small town. Pastor & Mrs. Truss (Bruce and Miho Truss) arrived just last year. God is love. In response to God’s commandment, eleven churches in Ishikawa Prefecture formed an organization called “Noto Help” and are taking the lead in volunteer work to distribute supplies from all over the country to help those in need. Pastor and Mrs. Truss acted as a hub and reached out to many including Mr. & Mrs. Genku, cleaning up and removing debris, carrying large items, etc. Pastor and Mrs. Truss also delivered drinking water and other supplies during their visit. We hope you will remember the Noto Help organization and Monzen Bible Church in your prayers.
Thank you very much for your deepest sympathy.
We will never forget the thoughts and prayers of the many friends surrounding my daughter in the far-away United States.
You have greatly encouraged us to do our best.
Finally, we wish you all good health and happiness.
Eiichi and Yukiko GENKYU
